I'll be leaving Tokamak 5 and Nijmegen in just over an hour, but before I head out the door some good news by email arrives: it's time for a new OS image according to the Plasma Active OS track schedule, and so there it is: v 1.0.70.
If you are following Plasma Active, download the image and see what's new. If you aren't following Plasma Active yet, what are you waiting for? Go to the install wiki page and get rocking.
We unfortunately don't have a coordinated change log for this release which includes all the improvements made in Plasma Quick and Contour over the last couple of weeks, and that's something we'll be working to improve as part of the process in the coming iterations.
Feedback and participation, as always, are welcome. Join us in #active on irc.freenode.net or the Active mailing list.
A big thanks goes out to our friends at open-slx for driving Balsam forward and helping hit our next milestone in the OS track!
I'd also like to thank those who have joined in from the openSUSE community, such as Will Stephenson, to work alongside the Plasma team on packaging issues. Growing the community of packagers and operating system enthusiasts around Plasma Active is great to see.

let's see if i can compile it... on kubuntu
Tried it in VirtualBox, but I never got to a usable screen. It seems to boot, but there's something very wrong (I think).
VirtualBox 4.0.6.r71344
800 MB memory
64 MB video memory with 3D acceleration activated
Well, the third time counts I guess...
Finally got to the login screen, and beyond! But it is soooo slow. I've now had the login sound play, but I am staring (and have been for a few minutes) at a black screen with a padlock in the upper right corner and something that looks like an old-fashioned window in the upper left corner) I'll leave it overnight, because I can't be bothered to wait any longer now.
@nowardev: all of the KDE based software used is largely platform independent and will certainly work on Kubuntu just fine. of course, the point with the OS track is that it's already put together for you, tracking the changes we make upstream as we make them.
@kjetil-kilhavn: "but I am staring (and have been for a few minutes) at a black screen with a padlock in the upper right corner and something that looks like an old-fashioned window in the upper left corner"
oh my; this is where you'll end up slapping your forehead... that's the lock screen. press on the lock and you'll see text that appears saying "Drag here to unlock". this is designed for touch screens and devices where the expectation is that they turn on and are logged in instantly.
the lock screen is completely new and the visual implementation sucks; we're working first on the infrastructure for the lock screen and then we'll move on to making that bit pretty.
but yes, as you've been staring at it for all those minutes ... it's been ready and waiting for you to do something .. namely, unlock it. :)
unfortunately it is not booting here in virtualbox. i dont understand why.
virtualbox 4.04
1024 MB memory
12 mb video memory with 3d acceleration activated
@aaron: well, I'm not sure who'se head should be slapped...
Since I assume you're right I tried again. Previously I had noticed a blue square around the lock, and had tried clicking it. I tried pressing the mouse key and holding it. And I waited... and I waited... after what seemed like ages but was probably "only" 10 to 15 seconds the magic words appeared. I dragged and dropped the lock and was introduced to a beautiful workspace.
Beautiful, but sluggish as nothing I have ever seen. I tried starting an application. On the first attempt nothing seemed to happen. On the second attempt an error message appeared saying either the application can't be started or the application launcher has crashed. OK, so my computer is two years old, but it does have 4 GB RAM and a decent CPU and should still run circles around almost any present mobile device. I hope performance receives some attention before declaring this "ready for consumers"...
@Kjetil: on the actual devices listed, none of which are bleeding edge hardware, it's instant and smooth.
all i can offer is that you are running it on a system with a mouse and keyboard in a virtual machine, things this is simply not being developed for.
@aaron: Fair enough, I agree completely that the environment I'm using is not among the targeted.
My HTC Hero is starting to behave strangely, but I hope it lasts until the products hits the shops :-)
I know I can buy a product and throw out the existing OS and load this, but I prefer the shops to be told that I actually want to buy the linux-powered product. I'm even willing to pay more, just out of principle.
Anyway, I think it would be a good idea to display the text when the padlock is clicked (perhaps that happens already and just didn't appear because it was just too slow on my system).
Final words: keep up the good work!
@kjetil: "know I can buy a product and throw out the existing OS and load this, but I prefer the shops to be told that I actually want to buy the linux-powered product."
i completely agree, and this is our long term goal.
right now we're trying to boot-strap the project, however, and so are inviting people to get involved if they would like. which unfortunately right now means getting hardware which comes with something else on it out of the box and using Plasma Active with it. we want to make sure that the community is able to be involved and participate rather than wait (and wait) for hardware to become available with it pre-installed while development happens behind closed doors.
this is how it has been with most other free software hardware devices, and it is not, imho, good: it cuts out the community and relies on the cooperation of hardware vendors a little too much (often creating chicken-and-egg problems in the process).
right now, we're in very much early adopter territory and looking for the motivated and adventurous. maybe a year from now we'll be able to send you a box with a device in it running plasma active :)
